Phonics and Reading

Our school has chosen Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP) programme to teach early reading and spelling. You can find more information about this scheme here: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

You will be able to access videos to help you make the phoneme sounds correctly. Children are given reading books that contain the phonemes that they are learning. They read the book several times at school and then bring the book home to share with you. This helps them to become really confident in recognising and recalling the graphemes and phonemes that they have been learning. We also send home a love of reading book - this is a book that you can enjoy together and may not be one your child can read independently. We appreciate the support parents provide their children with reading and developing a love of books.

In key stage 2 we use a whole class reading approach. High quality and challenging texts are carefully chosen to ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of classic and modern fiction, different authors and genres and these are used in all classes to engage children and develop a love of reading.

In key stage 2, we use Accelerated Reader to help children select appropriate reading books and allow our teachers to monitor their independent reading choices.

We teach comprehension strategies using the VIPERS approach.

We have developed a modern and attractive library area where children can use books for research or read for pleasure.
