Phonics and Reading

We use Phonics Bug Club to teach phonics https://www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/primary/subjects/english-literacy/bug-club-phonics. The Bug Club decodable readers are used alongside the phonics teaching and parents can also access these books at home online.

We appreciate the support parents provide their children with reading and developing a love of books.

In Key Stage 1 reading skills are further taught through small group guided reading sessions and in Key Stage 2 using a whole class reading approach. High quality and challenging texts are carefully chosen to ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of classic and modern fiction, different authors and genres and these are used in all classes to engage children and develop a love of reading.

In key stage two, we use Accelerated Reader to help children select appropriate reading books and allow our teachers to monitor their independent reading choices.

We have developed a modern and attractive library area where children can use books for research or read for pleasure.
